The piece was an interactive installation built with the explicit purpose of engaging the audience with their own feelings towards love, romantic or otherwise.

Guests were encouraged to write out their feelings on note cards and hang them up along the heart. They were told to not hold back. Some participants wrote heart felt messages to loved ones while others wrote messages poking fun at me for asking them to be vulnerable with such a heavy topic.

Though notes were anonymous, I still read them with the permission of the group to see what emotions the piece evoked.

Description: A crochet human heart hangs against a wall with a red and pink text projection that says “I hate you I love you” repeating over it. Red note cards that have a hand-carved stamp with an on fire heart with an eye in the center are hung on the heartstrings by the participating audience.

Inside the book were photos of my family members with me, embroidered or otherwise digitally edited. I utilized custom hand-carved fonts that were stamped onto pages and digital font editing to emphasize the formats of grids in addition to crocheted pages.

Overall, the piece was a dedication to the women of my family but especially my mother who encouraged me to pursue art and graphic design.

For a gallery exhibition about the different ways art can impact a person, I displayed a feminist art book that discusses how women pass down art forms through their family line though it is often diminished due to it’s association with womanhood. Through the use of grids, the piece displayed how graphic design and typography is similar to crochet and embroidery in it’s baseline.

On a gallery installation themed around romance, Labor of Love goes into the undervalued labor of women in the household through a medium dominated by woman and subsequently reduced to being a “craft” rather than an art form.

I designed flyers to promote my piece in the show and hung them up around town.

This piece was a mixed media piece with the purpose of pointing out the comfort in woman when they were being photographed by other woman and how the portrayal of themselves felt different.

This piece was a mixed media piece with the purpose of pointing out how humans feel the need to have control over nature, often at it’s detriment. The piece is about an injured animal that becomes captured to “save it” rather than rehabilitated and released back into the wild. The piece was accompanied by a poem read out and played over the speakers.

Description: Under a red light is a digitally painted bird with it’s pieces sewn together by red yarn and embroidery thread. It has a clipped wing which is attached by a dangling piece of yarn to emphasize the damage caused to the animal.

Accompanying Poem Part 1:

You see my as an omen of death / So you seek to kill me instead / The only death I bare / Will be my own

When I am wounded outside your yard / Have mercy to fix my leg / Do not try and clip my wings and take me in / Being taken from the sky is no mercy

I would rather die / Than have you take my wings / I am of no use to myself if not / And my spirit will live in the clouds instead

I will find no peace or comfort / Confined in your house alongside you / I will break your bones with my beak / Until you set me free
